1935- at age 16 he gets interested in mountains
1936-43- he works as a bee keeper with his father
1939-climbs his first mountain, Mt. Oliver in the Southern Alps
1944-he enlists in the New Zealand Air Force in World War II
1945-badly burnt in an accident in Fiji while in the Air Force
1947-climbs Mt. Cook in New Zealand for the first time
1949-traveled to Europe and climbed in the Austrian & Swiss Alps
29 May 1953- he reached the top of Mt Everest (29,028 feet
above sea level) with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay
16 July 1953-given knighthood & became Sir Edmund Hillary for his
conquest of Mt. Everest
1953-married Louise Rose
4 January 1958-led a team to the South Pole
1961-attempted to climb Mt. Makalu in the Himalayas without oxygen
1995- he was chosen to lead the NZ (Newzeland) Antartic expedition
1977- leads jetboat expedition from the mouth of the Ganges river to
its source
1987-Hillary's sherpa friend Tenzing Norgay died
11 January 2008- he died of heart problems in Auckland, New Zealand
